i have been thinking about a 1 year sabbatical but I dont think I have been working long enough to warrant one. thanks for inspiring me…people like you guys make me realise the dream is possible.

I know exactly how difficult it is to commit to a Sabbatical. I’m on one right now. And believe me, it has been very difficult to take the first step, but we did it… The finances are always the scariest, but we prepared well – started living frugal life way in advance, re-evaluating our needs and wants, selling vehicles and excess stuff, renting our house out… Yes, it works. And even though you’ll have doubts some time, it ‘s the best thing we’ve done!

Having just moved to Indonesia after 5 months here and many back and forths – adding in medical check-ups, biopsies, and re-checks, I hear you. I am here, though, in Bali, but have also been to Sumatra, Sulawesi, Bintan, and several of the islands around Bali. Let me know if I can help with any info or a contact here.

Hey Matt,
Sounsd like a hairy ride indeed – I like the idea of ‘reframing’ and you’re right that adaptability is a great life skill to have. Sometimes I’m not the best at that (I’m a planner), so this post was a nice reminder, and your honesty was refreshing.

All in all, you’ll get four months off and to experience a completely new culture – still sounds like a good deal to me! Hope the prep goes well.

I understand you very well, cause right now I’m being myself in the same situation here in Panama, back to my country and trying to settling down for a while in order for me to put down my loans and expenses , and then later on start backpacking myself.. but with always something going on sometimes it could be overwhelming, although I say to myself this is not the first time it had happened and is better to happen while you are in your own country and “home” rather ” that getting worse while you are abroad..”

Hi Joanna! Sorry, must have missed this comment. I’d definitely consider Canada. I love cold snowy winters. I’m not kidding about that. I’ve got quite a few American friends who live in Canada and absolutely love it.

Glad to hear you have at least a 4 month sabbatical to look forward to!! And if returning to work after Indonesia doesn’t work out, you know that Canada is hiring a lot of Americans lately (lots of different cultures, including Indonesian, in the bigger cities… and universal health care too:). I won’t talk about the winters though (sigh).
