World Domination Summit transportation

My Transport to WDS

On Friday I’ll be hitting the road for a 2 hour journey north to Portland and the World Domination Summit.  When I first heard about WDS many months ago I knew I had to go.  I’m a big fan of the work that Chris Guillebeau does and figured that if he were putting together an event it was going to be something epic.  So I signed up the first hour the signup site was open (well after the crash of the overloaded site subsided).

So what is WDS?  It’s an “unconvention” comprised of people from all over the world discussing how to live a remarkable life in the face of a conventional world.  Some of the amazing featured guests are Leo Babauta, Pamela Slim (Escape from Cubicle Nation), Jonathan Fields (Career Renegade), J.D. Roth, Jodi Ettenberg and many others including Chris Guillebeau.

One of the things I’m really looking forward to is meeting up with people I’ve only conversed with virtually either through Skype calls or blog comments.  Nothing trumps a good face to face meet up so I’m enthusiastic about that.

Here are a few of the incredible people I am looking forward to seeing:

Joel Runyon – Blog of Impossible Things

Joel is the chief instigator of pushing me to not take no for an answer.  His Blog of Impossible Things is an oasis of butt-kicking motivation.  He’s currently frantically driving across the country trying to reach Portland by Friday when he’ll jump out of a plane.  Despite his road trip he still makes time to sneak into Mount Rushmore.  He’ll also be kicking me in the whozits as payback for a lost bet.

Matt Bailey – A World of Inspiration

Matt and I share more than just the world’s greatest first name.  We share a love for travel and adventure.  I’ve shared many a Skype call with this guy who is actually a movie star in Canada.  He’s also on a road trip from Canada with his girlfriend and is not only jumping from a plane with Joel but launching himself off a bridge come Monday.

Gillian – One Giant Step

I only know Gillian from blog comments but I really feel a connection with her perspective and outlook on life.  She and her partner Jason traveled the world for a year (14 countries) and started a blog about all the great adventures.  I love the honest way she writes about travel and her feelings on the road.  One of my favorite posts is a thought provoking article on Leaving India and the dynamics on their relationship.  I’m definitely looking forward to seeing her in Portland.

And of course there are several people I have met in person that I’m looking forward to hanging out more with.  They include:

Mark Powers – Powers Percussion

Mark is the only drummer I know who is so good he can drum with a lightsaber (I gotta have more cowbell Mark!).  I really connect with Mark.  In fact we connect so well we are planning to motorcycle across Indonesia which is no journey for the faint of heart.  Now I just need Mark to teach me to ride a motorcycle.  This guy has so much going on with teaching students, his BDay-DDay site and playing gigs so he can donate money to worthy goals.  I seriously doubt this guy sleeps.  Must be the Jedi in him.

Sean Ogle – Location 180

Sean was one of the original motivators in my deciding to take a sabbatical and move to Indonesia.  When I stumbled upon his blog and read that he had quit a gig and moved to Thailand I was intrigued.  I sent him an email and he replied and ever since we’ve been good friends.  Sean has a lot going on but regardless he always finds time to respond to my questions or requests.  I dig that he’s into photography and his posts on Location 180 are always thought provoking.  Super cool guy!

Tyler Tervooren – Advanced Riskology

I met Tyler at Chris Guillebeaus’ Unconventional Book Tour and while I haven’t communicated a lot with him I enjoy his blog, which much like Joel’s blog, forces me to question my life and goals.  His posts are provoking and straight to the point which I think most of us need to force us to wake up a bit and take a few more risks.  I’m looking forward to getting to know him a bit more.  If you haven’t read his blog before head over there now and give yourself a real treat.

And finally, if you will be at WDS and we haven’t connected yet I’d love to meet you.  Go look at my photo so you can pick me out of a crowd, and leave a comment below telling me to be on the lookout for you.  One of my goals for this event is to meet as many inspiring people as possible and that definitely includes you.  See you at the World Domination Summit!
